IB World School

Welcome El Sereno students and families to the 2018/2019 school year!

I look forward to another exciting and successful year filled with many positive and enriching experiences for our Jaguar students as they continue along their academic journey to be College and Career ready!

Being "College and Career ready" means that our youth have the knowledge and skills needed to qualify for and succeed in postsecondary job training and/or education necessary for a chosen career.

The multiple learning pathways at El Sereno support this effort with a foundation rooted in our International Baccalaureate program. The IB program provides a challenging framework that encourages our students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world while developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people with inter-cultural understanding and respect.

Currently El Sereno Middle School offers the following distinct programs and pathways: AVID, Dual Language learning in Spanish and Mandarin, Environmental Science Academy, MESA, and Gifted, Highly Gifted, and High Ability Magnet as well as a partnership with USC’s Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) program to provide our students with increased college opportunities. NAI will provide participating students with the potential to receive a full scholarship to USC through guided supports from grade 6-12.

This school year, we will be planning the grand opening of an additional NEW Magnet commencing in the 2019/2020 school year.

We are thrilled to be adding The Environmental Science and Humanitarian Magnet to the many El Sereno Middle School Programs and Pathways!

Pardon the dust as we make way for our newly expanded Learning Garden! Returning families will notice that 7 bungalows have recently been removed to make way for an expansion of our current garden by over 100% including an outdoor learning space! Via our powerful partnership with Enrich LA http://enrichla.org, our garden program provides our students with an inquiry-based curriculum that facilitates an opportunity to understand, appreciate and value their connection, as well as responsibility, for our earth.

Parents are the first and most important Teacher!” I strongly advocate for parental collaboration and welcome parents and guardians to visit, volunteer and learn. There are many opportunities for families to get involved and support El Sereno’s success in any capacity that feels comfortable.

I welcome you to collaborate with our Jaguar Staff in Mi Casita where we offer a variety of experiences from learning about the new Common Core State Standards and College Preparatory Math to financial planning classes, and even Zumba classes. Come join us! Ms. Rodriguez supports all of our families while connecting the many talented parents in our community.

Mark your calendars and join us at our Feeder Family Fridays. Each month, principals from our feeder family of schools, Wilson High School, El Sereno Middle School and Farmdale Elementary gather with families to learn, share and honor the successes of our International Baccalaureate program.

Communication is critical! It is very important to me that all El Sereno families are up-to-date with all the great happenings at El Sereno.

Most Importantly, ensure you are signed up for the PARENT PORTAL, A ONE-STOP online system that securely connects parents and guardians to ALL of their student’s essential data! Monitor attendance, final grades, update information, connect with teacher, track English Leaner progress and MORE!
