Welcome El Sereno students and families to the 2017/2018 academic school year!
I look forward to another exciting and successful school year filled with many positive and enriching experiences for our Jaguar students as they continue along their academic journey to be College and Career ready!
Being "College and Career ready" means that our youth have the knowledge and skills needed to qualify for and succeed in postsecondary job training and/or education necessary for a chosen career.
The multiple learning pathways at El Sereno support this effort with a foundation rooted in our International Baccalaureate program. The IB program provides a challenging framework that encourages our students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world while developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people with inter-cultural understanding and respect.
The many learning programs and pathways at El Sereno Middle School include AVID, Dual Language learning in Spanish and Mandarin, Environmental Science Academy, MESA, and Gifted, Highly Gifted, and High Ability Magnet as well as a partnership with USC’s Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) program to provide our students with increased college opportunities. NAI will provide participating students with the potential to receive a full scholarship to USC through guided supports from grade 6-12.
El Sereno is on the move with exciting additions, improvements and changes! Thanks to the LAUSD, new bleachers adorn our large field with ample event and student seating. And thanks to LAUSD’s Parent and Family Center Improvement Program our Parent Center has been fully renovated and updated and will be ready to use soon!
Our yard and Jaguar Commons received new trees over the summer provided with great appreciation by the Los Angeles Beautification Team http://hbteam.org/about/ and thanks to our partnership with Beautiful Earth https://beautifyearth.org positive messages of respect and tolerance enhance our cafeteria and quad area.
Via our powerful partnership with Enrich LA http://enrichla.org, our garden program provides our students with an inquiry-based curriculum that facilitates an opportunity to understand, appreciate and value their connection, as well as responsibility, for our earth. With seven bungalows slated for removal shortly, we are making way for a magnificent garden expansion that will allow for even more of our Jaguar students to receive the benefits of this very special garden program.
“Parents are the first and most important Teacher!” I strongly advocate for parental collaboration and welcome parents and guardians to visit, volunteer and learn. There are many opportunities for families to get involved and support El Sereno’s success in any capacity that feels comfortable.
I welcome you to collaborate with our Jaguar Staff in Mi Casita where we offer a variety of experiences from learning about the new Common Core State Standards and College Preparatory Math to financial planning classes, and even Zumba classes. Come join us! Ms. Rodriguez supports all of our families while connecting the many talented parents in our community.
Mark your calendars and join us at our Feeder Family Fridays. Each month, principals from our feeder family of schools, Wilson High School, El Sereno Middle School and Farmdale Elementary gather with families to learn, share and honor the successes of our International Baccalaureate program.
Communication is critical! It is very important to me that all El Sereno families are up-to-date with all the great happenings at El Sereno.
