Welcome El Sereno students and families to the 2016/2017 academic school year!
I’m confident that this school year will prove to be an exciting and successful one, filled with many positive and enriching experiences for our Jaguar students as they continue along their academic journey to be College and Career ready!
Being "College and Career ready" means that our youth have the knowledge and skills needed to qualify for and succeed in postsecondary job training and/or education necessary for a chosen career. The multiple learning pathways at El Sereno support this effort with a foundation rooted in our International Baccalaureate program. The IB program provides a challenging framework that encourages our students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world while developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people with inter-cultural understanding and respect.
The many learning programs and pathways at El Sereno Middle School include AVID, Dual Language learning in Spanish and Mandarin, Environmental Science Academy, MESA, and Gifted, Highly Gifted, and High Ability Magnet as well as a partnership with USC’s Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) program to provide our students with increased college opportunities. NAI will provide participating students with the potential to receive a full scholarship to USC through guided supports from grade 6-12.
El Sereno was recently honored with 5 grants and we are thrilled to continue to employ the benefits of these grants this 2016/2017 school year.
Our recent grants include:
- Mandarin Excellence Award
- Food 4 Less Grant
- School Beautification Grant
- Educational Technology Grant
- Intervention Innovation Pilot Grant
Please pardon the dust as we undergo several inspiring campus improvements that are sure to contribute to our ever-improving school setting – an environment that serves as an outstanding stage for our students’ myriad learning opportunities and experiences.
In addition to LAUSD support we benefit from partnerships with Enrich LA, United Way and this year a new partnership with Beautify Earth.
Additions and renovations include an expansion of our beautiful Garden, a new mural in our cafeteria area addressing respect and tolerance, and brand new bleachers on our track!
“Parents are the first and most important Teacher!” I strongly advocate for parental collaboration and welcome parents and guardians to visit, volunteer and learn. There are many opportunities for families to get involved and support El Sereno’s success in any capacity that feels comfortable. I welcome you to collaborate with our Jaguar Staff in Mi Casita where we offer a variety of experiences from learning about the new Common Core State Standards, to financial planning classes, and even Zumba classes. Come join us! Ms. Rodriguez and Ms. Arias support all of our families while connecting the many talented parents in our community.
Communication is critical! It is very important to me that all El Sereno families are up-to-date with all the great happenings at El Sereno.
